Reddit’s Digital Collectibles

If we were to have our own Reddit page, what should we call it?

r/thedopestnewsletterofalltime? r/mintyfreshnftnews? Or maybe r/NFTsarethefuture?

Speaking of Reddit, they announced that they are bringing collectible avatars to the app in a press release yesterday.

Reddit

In their press release, Reddit noted how the new collectible avatars are different from normal avatars:

  1. They are available for purchase (vs. being free or available via Reddit Premium), and artists will be paid for each Collectible Avatar sold.

  2. Collectible Avatars are backed by blockchain technology, giving purchasers rights (a license) to use the art – on and off Reddit.

  3. You do not need cryptocurrency to purchase these avatars, nor are they being put up for auction. Each avatar has been priced at a fixed amount and is purchasable with fiat (government-issued) currencies.

The weird thing about all of this? Reddit isn’t calling them NFTs. In fact, they haven’t used that term a single time. The terms “digital collectible” and “blockchain-based tech” have been used frequently, but there hasn’t been any indication that they want it referred to as an NFT collection. We think they may be doing this to avoid the negativity surrounding the NFT market right now, but who really knows.

For now, you can join the r/collectibleavatars community to gain access to purchase a collectible.

Fill ‘em With Vibes

It's a rough time in the market, and some web3 startups are reaching for new ways to keep the vibes up. Some are fully committing to the cause by hiring a "Vibes Manager".

A what, you say?! Yes, a manager of vibes. In the downturn of the market, web3 businesses want to keep the momentum and energy going in the space. Role responsibilities include spending copious amounts of time on Twitter, ensuring content and events align with the right energy, and to continue building community.

Essentially, they are marketing roles but redesigned to fit the current needs of the space and to attract the right person who will keep the vibes strong. As ridiculous as it may sound, it's a genius move and fulfills a genuine need in the space right now to keep the WAGMI belief alive.

Summer Reads on Lock 🔒

John here. Summer is in full swing and if you find yourself sitting by the pool, the beach, or the campground you may need a good book. One of my favorite genres to read is the “narrative business” book where you get to learn the origin of a company or project. Examples include Hatching Twitter (Twitter), The Everything Store (Amazon), and Bad Blood (Theranos), and crypto has its own titles in this category.

Two books I enjoyed recently were Kings of Crypto which details the origin of Coinbase, one of the largest players in the crypto world and The Infinite Machine which takes you through the creation of Ethereum and all the players involved to launch this new technology. I love audiobooks and listened to both of these quickly and enthusiastically. Add them to your summer lists if you want to better understand the world of Web3 and crypto.
